The Summer Game Challenge: 2026
Permalink for The Summer Game Challenge: 2026The 10 games of my summer
The Summer Game Challenge runs every year from Memorial Day to Labor Day and is intended to give folks a little more structure to their game playing over the summer months. I feat heard about it from Matt Horton over on The Worst Garbage Discord server. Last year I didn't want to limit myself, but this year I'm looking for some structure, so I'm going to go for it.

Post a list of 10 games before May 23, 2026. These games can be new or old, previously started or completely fresh. To complete the challenge, complete 4 or more games from your own list by September 7, 2026. Other than that, there's no rules.

I want my list to be a healthy mix of things. Some are games that I've wanted to get to for some time but never had the chance to. Some are games that I've started and dropped. Some are new and some are old.
-
Last Gasp: A game by Discord member Ashley, Last Gasp is a JRPG Roguelike. I've been meaning to get to it and just never have.
-
Metaphor Re:Fantazio: A JRPG by Atlus and P-Studio. A game I enjoyed the start of, but didn't really get grabbed by. I want to go back to it and give it another real shot.
-
Fields of Mistria: Perhaps a hopeful pick. I am hopeful that the game's 1.0 update hits before Summer's end. There's enough there currently, though, that I may start the game before it fully releases.
-
Caves of Qud: My current game and one that I feel is very likely to land in the "completed" pile. I'd like to get through the story at least once.
-
Atelier Ayesha: A game I've gotten within spitting distance of the end with, but failed right at the finish line. Unfortunately, the structure of it requires replaying from the beginning to more properly manage time. I'd like to go back and finish it though.
-
Island off Outer Darkness: This sounds like an incredibly interesting game to me, but I haven't picked it up yet. I heard about it from Side Story.
-
Yakuza Kiwami 2: Continuing my exploration of Yakuza with the next entry. It's been a little bit since I finished Kiwami 1, so it'll be nice to see the boys again.
-
Trails in the Sky 1st: The remake of Trails in the Sky FC. One of the games I'm most eager to pick up this summer, but I've heard mixed things about it on Linux. Hopefully I can get it to work.
-
CrossCode: Another game I've started, but not gotten very far in. I feel like I'd like it, but it just wasn't sticking early on. I'm hoping trying it again will help me attach.
-
Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo: I really enjoyed The Mermaid's Curse a whole bunch earlier this year. I'd love to go back and play the first game.
